Abstract Over the years, the demand for high engine efficiency has resulted in the development of new generation superalloys with improved elevated temperature properties, especially creep resistance. This study aimed to evaluate creep and mechanical behavior of Inconel 718 superalloy. Creep tests were performed at temperature range of 650 to 700 °C and stress range of 625 to 814 MPa. Hot tensile and oxidation tests were performed and the characterization techniques used in this study were scanning electron microscopy (SEM) for microstructural and fracture surface analysis, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) for precipitates analysis; grazing X-ray diffraction for analysis of oxide formation and Vickers microhardness. The analyze of stress exponent value (n = 36.48) and activation energy (Qc = 512.97 kJ/mol), suggested that creep mechanism at 650 °C was the climb dislocation mechanism. The Inconel 718 presented ductile fracture at 650 and 700 °C and intergranular fracture to 675 °C.

ABSTRACT: Rotary friction welding process (RFW) is one of the most used processes in the world for manufacturing bimetallic components that require high mechanical strength. All process occurs in solid state at temperatures below the melting point of the involved materials, having as the main bonding mechanisms the diffusion and mechanical mixture. The purpose of this work was to carry out an experimental thermal analysis of the dissimilar joint AA6351 T6 aluminum and AISI 304L stainless steel during the friction welding operation through system of thermocouples. Gradients of temperature obtained had their data analyzed and recorded. Results of the experimental thermal analysis showed the behavior of the temperature in the bonding interface, how the dissipation occurs in the radial and longitudinal direction, heating rates, cooling, maximum temperatures reached, its relationship with the different stages of the process and the influence on mechanical properties of welded joint. This study is of great importance for relating the temperature distribution in the bonding interface with atomic diffusion and mechanical resistance of junction.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was the temperature monitoring at bonding interface during the rotary friction welding process of dissimilar materiais: AA1050 aluminum with AISI 304 stainless steel. As it is directly related to the mechanical strenght of the junction, its experimental determination in real time is of fundamental importance for understanding and characterizing the main process steps, and the definition and optimization of parameters. The temperature gradients were obtained using a system called Thermocouple Data-Logger, which allowed monitoring and recording data in real-time operation. In the graph temperature versus time obtained, the heating rates, cooling were analyzed, and the maximum temperature was determined that occurred during welding, and characterized every phases of the process. The efficiency of this system demonstrated by experimental tests and the knowledge of the temperature at the bonding interface open new Unes of research to understand the process of friction welding.

Abstract: The purpose of this work was to assess the development of solid state joints of dissimilar material AA1050 aluminum and AISI 304 stainless steel, which can be used in pipes of tanks of liquid propellants and other components of the Satellite Launch Vehicle. The joints were obtained by rotary friction welding process (RFW), which combines the heat generated from friction between two surfaces and plastic deformation. Tests were conducted with different welding process parameters. The results were analyzed by means of tensile tests, Vickers microhardness, metallographic tests and SEM-EDX. The strength of the joints varied with increasing friction time and the use of different pressure values. Joints were obtained with superior mechanical properties of the AA1050 aluminum, with fracture occurring in the aluminum away from the bonding interface. The analysis by EDX at the interface of the junction showed that interdiffusion occurs between the main chemical components of the materials involved. The RFW proves to be a great method for obtaining joints between dissimilar materials, which is not possible by fusion welding processes.

The understanding of the creep behavior of silicon nitride (Si3N4) is extremely complex because of a large number of parameters influencing simultaneously the creep deformation of the materials. In general, the main creep mechanisms acting in these materials are grain boundary sliding or materials transport by solution-precipitation process. In this work, the creep behavior has been monitored by X ray diffraction analysis, determining the peak intensity ratio of the (101) and (210) planes of b-Si3N4. This characterization technical, allied the microstructural analysis can contribute to determination of creep mechanisms acting in material. The beta-Si3N4 grains are highly elongated with aspect ratios ranging between 3 and 11. Therefore, the intensity of the peaks related to the basal plane (101) tends to be higher when compared to the lateral planes (210). During creep deformation occurs alignment of the elongated beta-Si3N4 grains in the plane parallel to the direction of the applied load, reflecting in the peak intensity ratio. Crept samples presented variations in the (101)/(210) peak intensity ratio of beta-Si3N4 indicating that grain rotation can to be contributing with creep deformation. In this way, the use of X ray diffractometry as a mean to characterize microstructural changes during creep has been shown successfully.

The objective of this work has been to compare the reliability of two Si3N4 ceramics, with Y2O3/Al2O3 or CTR2O3/Al2O3 mixtures as additives, in regard to their 4-point bending strength and to confirm the potential of the rare earth oxide mixture, CTR2O3, produced at FAENQUIL, as an alternative, low cost sinter additive for pure Y2O3 in the sintering of Si3N4 ceramics. The oxide mixture CTR2O3 is a solid solution formed mainly by Y2O3, Er2O3, Yb2O3 and Dy2O3 with other minor constituents and is obtained at a cost of only 20% of pure Y2O3. Samples were sintered by a gas pressure sintering process at 1900 °C under a nitrogen pressure of 1.5 MPa and an isothermal holding time of 2 h. The obtained materials were characterized by their relative density, phase composition and bending strength. The Weibull analysis was used to describe the reliability of these materials. Both materials produced presented relative densities higher than 99.5%t.d., b-Si3N4 and Y3Al5O12 (YAG) as cristalline phases and bending strengths higher than 650 MPa, thus demonstrating similar behaviors regarding their physical, chemical and mechanical characteristics. The statistical analysis of their strength also showed similar results for both materials, with Weibull moduli m of about 15 and characteristic stress values s o of about 700 MPa. These results confirmed the possibility of using the rare earth oxide mixture, CTR2O3, as sinter additive for high performance Si3N4 ceramics, without prejudice of the mechanical properties when compared to Si3N4 ceramics sintered with pure Y2O3.
